This is the Pratt & Whitney factory.

They produced the engines that powered iconic aircraft like the B-24, Grumman F6F Hellcat, and Vought F4U Corsair.

THE TWIN WASP / WORKING ARCHIVE

Sources and model notes

This reconstruction targets the wartime R-1830-92 used in the C-47A. Variant records establish its identity and specifications; the S1C3-G manual supplies qualified shared construction details. Local dimensions, unconfirmed accessory fits and the factory layout remain interpretive.

The assembly hall follows the tall columns, roof trusses, hanging lamps and rows of engine stands visible in a supplied archival photograph. Its plant, date and engine type remain unverified; the room dimensions and station layout are interpretations.

Engines and aircraft

The Flying Fortress used the nine-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone. This fourteen-cylinder Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp is a different engine, used in aircraft including the B-24 and C-47. The Hellcat and Corsair used the larger eighteen-cylinder R-2800 Double Wasp.

01
Library of Congress — East Hartford factory survey, 1940–41

LOT 1283 records machining, assembly, inspection, testing and crated engines ready for shipment. Supports the sequence; the outdoor dispatch yard and exact route are reconstructed, not a surveyed plant plan.

02
Pratt & Whitney Service School — April 1945 specifications

The inspected wartime table explicitly maps S1C3-G to R-1830-92, with 5½-inch bore and stroke, single-speed supercharging and 16:9 crankshaft-to-propeller reduction. It establishes the selected manual’s model relationship.

03
Pratt & Whitney — Twin Wasp S1C3-G maintenance manual

Inspected specification, crankcase, cylinder, valve and accessory pages. The 1945 model table connects S1C3-G to the -92; this scan’s edition remains unresolved. Casting dimensions and exact production accessory fits are still qualified.

04
Pratt & Whitney — model designations and characteristics

Manufacturer table revised July 1956, printed E2 and E12: model correspondence and -92 specifications. It distinguishes equipment-dependent lengths and later -92A changes; this later document is not a wartime production drawing.

05
Pacific Flying Boats — R-1830-92 illustrated powerplant

June 2020 Canso handbook, figures 29–30 on printed pages 183 and 185: labeled -92 exterior and sectional arrangement. Used to corroborate component placement, with modern-operator provenance retained.

06
Library of Congress — drilling engine cases, 1940

Jack Delano, October 1940, East Hartford. Catalog and photograph inspected: multi-spindle drilling, hoist chains and factory structure. Exact engine variant unidentified.

07
Library of Congress — master-rod forgings, 1942

Andreas Feininger, June 1942. Catalog and photograph inspected: unfinished rod forgings awaiting machining. P&W engine family not specified.

08
Library of Congress — inspecting rod forgings, 1942

Andreas Feininger, June 1942. Catalog and photograph inspected: forgings laid out at a staffed inspection bench. No production tolerances are supplied.

09
Library of Congress — engine assembly, 1940

Jack Delano, October 1940, East Hartford. Catalog and photograph inspected: open crankcase, rods and a worker at a raised assembly stand. Variant is not identified by the catalog.

10
Library of Congress — tappet roller inspection, 1942

Andreas Feininger, June 1942. Catalog and photograph inspected: small-part inspection with organized batches, gauges and task lighting.

11
Library of Congress — engine test chamber, 1940

Jack Delano, October 1940. Catalog and photograph inspected: observation window, instrument panel and recording sheets. Supports a separate test cell, not the exhibit’s exact layout or test schedule.

12
Smithsonian — wartime R-1830-92 Twin Wasp

Museum record A19750478000: fourteen cylinders in two rows; 1,200 hp at 2,700 rpm; wartime C-47-family applications. Museum dimensions apply to the collected object.

The production sequence is an educational reconstruction. It does not reproduce a verified plant routing sheet, overhaul instruction, or complete illustrated parts catalogue.
